Steven Craig: Former Wycombe Wanderers striker joins as Gillingham’s new assistant manager
Gareth Ainsworth appoints former striker as Gillingham's new assistant manager ahead of 2026/27 campaign.
Gareth Ainsworth has turned to one of his former players to take on the role of assistant manager ahead of the new campaign.
Steven Craig, a 45-year-old former striker who plied his trade for a host of clubs in Scotland, also made 70 appearances for Wycombe Wanderers during Ainsworth’s time at the helm.
Ainsworth clearly viewed Craig, who had been a part of the management team at Gala Fairydean Rovers in the fifth tier of Scottish football, as the right fit for his management team at Priestfield, and after reaching out, the deal was done to bring Craig down to ME7.
“I am delighted to get it done,” Craig told the Gillingham FC official website.
“It came out of the blue. I got the call two or three weeks ago asking if I would be interested and it sort of snowballed from there.
“I can’t wait to get started. The chance to go back full-time with the gaffer, Dobbo (technical director Richard Dobson) and Watesy (head of first-team development David Wates) was too good to turn down.”
Craig’s name has already been added to the club directory at Priestfield, and he’ll set to work on planning the first-team’s pre-season sessions with boss Ainsworth as they prepare the players for the start of the 2026/27 League Two campaign.
